What is JEE?
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is one of India's most competitive engineering entrance exams, serving as the gateway to prestigious institutions such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other top engineering colleges.
It is conducted in two stages:
- JEE Main - Required for admission to NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions, and serves as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced.
- JEE Advanced - Conducted for students aiming to secure a seat in IITs and other premier engineering institutes.
JEE Main is the first phase of the engineering entrance examination, serving as the qualifying test for JEE Advanced. Only candidates who clear JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced, which is required for admission into IITs.
The exam is computer-based and comprises two main papers:
- Paper 1 - For admission to B.E./B.Tech programs in engineering colleges and universities recognized by the State Government. It also serves as an eligibility test for JEE Advanced.
- Paper 2A & Paper 2B - Conducted for admission to B. Arch (Paper 2A) and B. Planning (Paper 2B) courses in India.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria
Candidates appearing for JEE Main must fulfill the following eligibility requirements as set by the National Testing Agency (NTA):
Required Criteria | Details |
---|---|
JEE Main Age Limit | No age limit. Candidates of any age who meet the educational requirements can apply. |
Qualifying Examination | Must have cleared 10+2 or equivalent from a recognized board/university. Students appearing for Class 12 in 2025 are also eligible. |
Minimum Percentage Requirement | Candidates must pass Class 12 to appear for JEE Main. However, for admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, a minimum of 75% (General Category) or 65% (SC/ST/PwD) is required in Class 12. |
Number of Attempts | Candidates can attempt JEE Main for three consecutive years after completing Class 12. The exam is held twice a year, allowing a maximum of six attempts. |
Compulsory Subjects | Mathematics, Physics, and one optional subject from Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational Subject in Class 12. |
